RIVER Bilums are made from wild Tulip
Tree Bark, Wild Makas Tree Bark or Jute plant leaves. Village weavers in Papua New Guinea have been fashioning
these beautiful bags for centuries. The tree bark or striped Jute leaf is
prepared by soaking in water for up to 6 months before drying and then the
strands of bark are rolled on the weavers thigh into twine. It takes up to
3 months for an experienced weaver to fashion a large Bilum Bag. Dyes are
natural and derived from jungle sources like stone, sea shells and orchid
bark.
